My best friend revealed last night that he’s moving out of state this winter to be closer to his wife’s family. I’ve known him for over half my life and I consider him my brother.
He’s incredibly excited about a change in scenery. He feels like his career up here is going nowhere (and truthfully it isn’t) and wants to try something new.
Suddenly getting way too nostalgic...

That sucks, is he moving far?

my best friend of 29 years moved to CA last year (from DE)...I know the feels.

That’s always rough man. In the last 6 years my 4 closest friends have moved to Florida, Colorado, and New York. It’s never easy, but at least it’s not that hard to “stay on touch” these days. One of those friends is even actually good at communicating and we WhatsApp each other at least ones a day.

I still talk to two of my high school friends daily, it’s pretty easy to stay in touch nowadays.

He’s moving to Vegas, from the PNW.

Can’t have beers over the phone at the local watering hole! At least not in an efficient manner.

Ehh that’s kind of far. Silver lining is at least if you go to visit him you and your wife can check out Vegas and go see a show.

My 2 good friends just left me as well. One was in Florida with me for 10 years and we were generally attached at the hip. He went into a massive depression and I am upset at myself for not notcing how bad it was till I went to his house...and how dirty it was. He was living in filth and I didn’t know. I would’ve helped him clean...or did it myself. You can’t be happy living like that.
He moved to Atlanta and my childhood friend moved his family to England. So it kind of hurts.

This is true. Although I haven’t really had any local friends since I graduated college, so I’ve never really been able to do that to begin with.

I feel your pain. I might add that it is even harder if you have a married couple that you and your partner both enjoy spending time with, are good friends, and they up and move away. Hard to have dinners with them over the internet.

I know that feeling. I’m not going to get to see my closest friend for the next ~30 months. I’m not handling it as well as I should be.

The whole process of forming/maintaining friendships in my 30's is not something I’m good at. I moved far away at 26, lost touch with a lot of friends, made some new friends in the south, moved back north at 31, lost touch with my southern friends, and failed to get back in touch with my northern friends.
More than geography though, I find that I’m losing a lot of friends to parenthood. Once they start down that path, they never come back.

It only took 3 years to organize the first one!

I know those feels all too well. My two best friends from childhood both moved out of state. One of them is putting his 20 in the Army, but I know damn well he’s never coming back. Side note: It’s amazing that they guy we used to call DrunkBobNoPants is now a Major in the Army.

Oh bummer!
Does the lack of the ADL mean you can’t drive out of the country or past certain times?
![]() 01/18/2018 at 11:20 |
|
What is an ADL? Never mind, looked it up. Interesting never heard of that.
![]() 01/18/2018 at 11:24 |

ADL allows you to travel through Mexico and Canada w/o a passport.

ooooh ok. Huh, we need a passport to come down regardless.

If you are putting together another drive anytime soon or in the summer, I’d come across the 49th for it!
If it was... uh, slightly north of Seattle at all that would be cool too!

That seems like a regrettable decision.
